About Dan Stanfill

Dan was the team leader for Surveyor. He was the principal designer of Surveyor's client-server architecture, implemented the communication code used between the user interface and the render daemons (survd), and the interface for adding renderers.

The high quality ray-cast renderer used in Surveyor, originally implemented by Bob Mortensen (JPL 1983 - 1990), was modified significantly by Dan and incorporated into Surveyor.

Dan joined JPL in 1983 after graduating from Harvey Mudd College with a B.S. in engineering. He worked in the Multimission Image Processing Laboratory for about 5 years implementing image processing and display software (the VICAR image processing executive, the Vicar Interactive Display Subsystem (VIDS), and a number of image processing applications). In 1988 Dan joined the Visualization and Earth Science Applications group where he worked with Bob Mortensen on 3D rendering algorithms. In 1990, Dan began work with the rest of the Surveyor team to make surveyor.

Dan left JPL in Nov. 1994 to go make cool games with Activision Studios.
