of Hawai'i This rendering shows the four oldest (of the five) volcanoes on Hawai'i. The view is from the northwest of the island looking southeast. The volcanoes (from left to right) are Kohala, Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Haulalai. Cinder cones cover the top of Kohala and the slopes of Mauna Kea. The darkest lava flow coming down the center of Mauna Loa and circling Hualalai was active in 1859. The white "hook" on the coast is the center of the image is the harbor at the city of Kawaihae. |
